Long Covid Mentoring

Long Covid

Long Covid is the term used to describe ongoing symptoms that last longer than 4 weeks after a Covid-19 infection that are not explained by an alternative diagnosis. It is also known as Post Covid-19 Syndrome, Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS COV-2 infection (PASC), or Post Covid Condition. The ONS (Office for National Statistics) estimates that over 2 million people in the UK are suffering from Long Covid symptoms as of 1st September 2022.

Covid-19 is a multi-systemic virus affecting many body systems including:

  • Endocrine

  • Renal

  • Gastrointestinal

  • Dermatologic

  • Immunological

  • Respiratory

  • Cardiovascular

  • Autonomic

  • Pulmonary

  • Hematologic

  • Neurological

Studies have shown that there are over 200 symptoms of Long Covid and these can affect all sufferers differently, with some people suffering from many symptoms across multiple systems which are impacting their everyday life significantly. Symptoms can also fluctuate over time and have been linked to over exertion and histamine reactions, as well as inflammation and a dysregulated autonomic nervous system.

The chances of having long term symptoms after a Covid-19 infection is not determined by the severity of the illness. You can still suffer from Long Covid symptoms after a mild or asymptomatic case of Covid-19.

Many people suffering from Long Covid have since been diagnosed with other conditions including POTS (Postural Othostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), Dysautonomia, Asthma, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Diabetes. They were perfectly healthy prior to their Covid infection and are now having to use medication for these illnesses, as well as learning how to live with their new conditions.

Researchers are learning more about how and why Covid-19 is affecting different people in such a variety of different ways, and why some people experience mild symptoms which dissipate over time while others have life-threatening organ damage or lasting disability and chronic fatigue.

After suffering from Long Covid myself for nearly two years, I feel I have the experience and knowledge to help fellow sufferers to ease some of their symptoms and see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can help with pacing and calming the autonomic nervous system and can offer a friendly, supportive shoulder when needed.
